Project Description

Jyoti Shon

Stone Sculptor

Born in Germany in 1949. At the age of 16 it was apparent that art would play a major role in my life. However it didn’t take long for me to realize that art schools were not going to satisfy my desire for the kind of art I was seeking, and so I eventually made the decision in 1972 to leave the ‘known world’ behind, so to speak, and embark on a long journey of self discovery that ultimately led me to the ‘mythical East’, the ancient subcontinent of India. In 1981 I arrived in the US and finally settled in Santa Fe in 1989. When I work with stone I am always conscious of its ancient history. Everything originates from stone, it is the sand on the beach and the dust floating in space, it is like time solidified. My goal is to create works that are rooted in the nature of things. That is my reality.

“Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it. You have to create your life. You have to carve it, like a sculpture. The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.”.
